Acclaimed and Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese stated in a recent interview that it is necessary to “fight” against the culture of superhero cinema.

The iconic filmmaker expressed concern about the increasing occupation that blockbusters have in theaters and warned that this dominance presents a danger to the industry. “Generations will emerge that believe these are the only [types of] films,” he told GQ Magazine.

“They already think that. Which means we have to fight harder. And it has to come from below. It has to come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris Nolan, you know what I mean? And hit them from all sides.”

“Hit them from all sides and don’t give up. Let’s see what you have to show. Go out there and do it. Go reinvent. Don’t complain about it. But it’s true, because we have to save cinema,” said Scorsese.

Martin also commented on the production of feature films in which content consumption was shaped by streaming. The director stated that, although some films still have “incredible directors and visual effects artists doing beautiful work”, they mean nothing more than “consuming something and then completely eliminating it from your mind”.

Martin Scorsese’s next film is Killers of the Flower Moon, which opens in theaters on October 20 before arriving on the Apple TV+ streaming service (no release date yet).

In the film’s plot, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) is an American in love with an indigenous woman (Lily Gladstone) who partners with companies to take over native lands and explore oil.
