This Wednesday, November 15, the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) approved a resolution with the aim of containing the conflict between Israel and the extremist group Hamas. The vote resulted in 12 votes in favor, 3 abstentions and no votes against.

The proposal was presented by the delegation from Malta, a European country that currently holds a non-permanent seat on the council. According to Malta’s Foreign Minister, Ian Borg, the text aims to stop the suffering of children affected by the conflict in the Middle East.

The resolution proposes the implementation of humanitarian pauses in the conflict and civilian access to humanitarian aid. Furthermore, it demands the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups, especially children.” While the measure does not specifically condemn the October 7 attack nor Israel’s retaliations against the Gaza Strip, it calls for the unconditional release of all hostages and rejects the forced displacement of civilian populations.
The resolution also seeks to guarantee access to essential supplies for Palestinians. Ian Borg, Malta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, said that Malta’s Permanent Mission to the UN has been working intensively on drafting this draft resolution in recent weeks, listening to Council members and other stakeholders to ensure a balanced and operational text.
