Latricia Green, a hospital employee in Detroit, Michigan, was tragically shot and killed by her ex-husband, Mario Green, just one month after she had successfully obtained a restraining order against him. Despite her efforts, the order was never delivered to the suspect, rendering it ineffective at the time of the attack.
The incident occurred on the morning of Friday, 22 August, in the basement of the Henry Ford Hospital, where Latricia worked. According to Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison, a verbal altercation between the two preceded the shooting. Mario Green, 53, fired multiple shots at Latricia before fleeing the scene in a white 2011 Dodge Charger.
Authorities launched an extensive manhunt, warning the public that Green was armed and dangerous. He was eventually apprehended without resistance in the early hours of Saturday morning, following a 12-hour search. Chief Bettison credited both the police and the community for their cooperation in the swift capture.
Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald confirmed that Latricia had previously sought legal protection. Her first attempt to obtain a restraining order had been denied, but she succeeded on her second try. Unfortunately, due to administrative delays, the order was never served to Mario Green, leaving her vulnerable.
The shooting prompted a temporary lockdown of the Henry Ford Hospital. The hospital’s parent organisation, Henry Ford Health, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their staff member and announced that they are working with law enforcement and conducting an internal investigation. They also pledged to support employees affected by the traumatic event and reaffirmed their commitment to safety.
This case has sparked renewed scrutiny of the legal system’s ability to protect victims of domestic violence. Though Latricia followed the legal process to secure her safety, the delay in executing the court order proved fatal. The tragedy highlights the urgent need for more efficient and enforceable protective measures for vulnerable individuals.
